Getting Soft

I may not be cut out to be a writer after all. Every time I have to write bad things happening to my characters now I feel really bad. I want to cry for them. Is that good or bad? I think it's bad, because it makes me want to not make my characters go through these kinds of things. Then again, all my stories end so badly for the characters involved, maybe it will just cause me to write more happy stories.
