Cost Efficient?

So, I'm trying to clean up a peanut butter jar so I can recycle it. I'm wondering if it's even beneficial to the environment. I think I used twice as many resources to clean it up that we conserve by recycling it. Is this something I should be doing? Or does the recycling place have the facilities to clean it up better? Anyone know?
